KVS Community

It takes a village

When parents, caregivers and extended family members become involved in school life it has benefits for children, families and the school and creates a vibrant thriving school that is more than the sum of its parts.

We invite parents to become involved in the KVS learning community, as well as in social activities and the practical functioning of the school.

ENGAGE IN THE KVS COMMUNITY

  • Come to a working bee.

  • Offer your skills or suggest a topic for a Personal Learning Project (PLPs are electives).

  • Utilise your networks to propose and create opportunities for children to go Out ‘N’ About to interesting places.

  • Be a helper at a mentor-led PLP.

  • Make a time to chat with your child’s mentors after school.

  • Visit the classrooms before or after school to look at the wall displays.

  • Ask your child to show you their contract and explain the associated activities.

  • Volunteer in the kitchen or garden or help with harvesting during the long summer break.

  • Assist with one on one reading.

  • Join the Board.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES

There are a number of opportunities to gather together socially as a whole school community. An annual event that kicks-off each year is the Family Camp (FAMP). All students, their parents and siblings and KVS staff camp together for three days and participate in a mix of structured activities and informal opportunities for connection and community building.

There are also other opportunities throughout the year to gather as a community, to attend information sessions and social gatherings aimed at the adults within our community.

Statement of Cultural Safety

At Koonwarra Village School, we respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the South Eastern Kulin Nation, the Bunurong People, and we extend this acknowledgement to the neighbouring Gunai/Kurnai people. We pay our respects to their Elders, past and present, and recognise their role in caring for Country over tens of thousands of years. We acknowledge our true history and appreciate the significance of our connection to place as we live, work, play and walk together.

We are committed to ensuring that all children feel safe and respected at KVS, including Aboriginal children, and we recognise and value the unique identities and experiences of First Nations peoples. We seek to foster a deeper understanding and appreciation of the rich cultural heritage of Australia's First Peoples and to create a culturally safe environment where all children can express their culture, beliefs, and spirituality and feel supported by our staff and community.

We understand that valuing cultural safety requires ongoing effort and engagement with the Aboriginal community. We are committed to this process as we strive to create an inclusive and welcoming learning community.
